Graduation Date is Set!!

This year's 5th grade graduation is set for Monday, June 21st at 10 am at PS 295, on 18th street between 6th and 7th Avenues. This was the location for last year's ceremony, and it is quite lovely. Mark your calendars!

Upcoming Trips

*Class -305, 5-306 and 5-307 are all traveling to the Brooklyn Museum this week to enhance our social studies unit on the Maya.

*Class 5-307 is traveling to the Windsor Terrace branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on Tuesday, February 2nd, and will be visiting the Prospect Park Ice Rink as part of their marble jar reward on Monday, February 1st.

The Mayan Culture

The Fifth Grade will be taking a trip to the Museum of Natural History on Monday, January 11th, to start off our unit on the native cultures of the Western Hemisphere. We will be looking indepth at the Mayan Culture. Check out the links to the right to learn more about this amazing civilizations contributions to astronomy, mathematics, science, writing and art.

Greenwood Cemetery Photographs







Thanksgiving Celebration

The fifth grade classes will be celebrating Thanksgiving in their classrooms on Wednesday, November 25th. We are looking for families who can bring in one or more of the following:

1. 1/4 lb sliced turkey (one per family)
2. mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes
3. 2 bottles apple or cranberry juice
4. 20 plates or forks or napkins
5. Corn (enough for 20 students)
6. Cups for juice (20)

Rock Stars!



305 and 307 were treated to a Rock Show on November 5th when Matthew and Steven Scafuri shared their musical talent and funny banter during Parents as Enrichment Partners. You were awesome!

Elizabeth Mann




Author Elizabeth Mann visited Classes 5-305, 5-306 and 5-307 on November 5th. She shared her inspirations, her writing notebook, and original illustrations from her book The Brooklyn Bridge.

Class 5-305, 5-306 and 5-307 will be traveling to the Greenwood Cemetery for a tour of some of their most historic monuments as well as a lesson in memorial symbolism. Social Studies Test

Next Monday and Tuesday, November 16th and 17th, the 5th grade students will take the 5th Grade Social Studies Test, which asks multiple choice and document-based questions about social studies content from grades 3 and 4, as well as asks students to write a document based essay. We have been reviewing the test in class, but you can also review at home using the SS test prep links on the right hand side of this page (scroll down to the bottom!). Please make sure students get proper rest and breakfast for the testing days.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Yes, already! The parent-teacher conferences will be held next Tuesday, November 9th, from 1 pm - 3 pm and 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm. You will be receiving a form this week to sign up. Please let us know if your student has younger brothers or sisters, and we schedule their times close together.

Parents as Enrichment Partners

November's Parents as Enrichment Partners will be this Friday, November 6th, from 8:45 - 9:25 am. We will be playing Math games, and have special guests Steven and Matthew to sing for Mrs. Theodorakis and Ms. Fought's classes. It will be fantastic, so please join us!

Book Fair!

The Scholastic Book Fair is being held in the MMR beginning this Thursday, November 5th through next Thursday, November 12th. You can find all kinds of great books, crafts,posters, bookmarks, pens and erasers and more. Find out when your class will be visiting from your teacher.
