The Quilt by Brian B.

THE QUILT BY BRIAN
Kate taught us about how her grandma made quilts with dresses that became worn out and old. Kate’s grandma was also George Washington’s wife in a play about George Washington. The same dress she used for the play she used for her wedding. When you could order blankets from catalog’s came she threw out all the blankets that she made.
One day when Kate’s grandma passed away Kate and her sister went through their grandma’s house looking for photos and more they found a quilt that her grandma made. The quilt looked like stitched in hexagon shapes that looked like flowers. The colors were bright, like blue, red, yellow, orange, pink and green. Kate looked up the blanket on Google images and found the same blanket it was popular in the 1920s. This quilt was amazing.

Umbrella Theory Collages by Alyssa

During reading workshop, the class has been making umbrella theory collages.  An umbrella theory collage is when classmates partner up and make a theory with evidence that supports your theory.  These collages are based on the Patricia Polacco stories Just Plain Fancy and The Butterfly.  The evidence isn’t always writing – some of it can be pictures that symbolize something that is important in the story.
For The Butterfly, you can draw tall boots to symbolize the Nazis.  You can use character actions, character quotes, character internal thinking, interactions between characters and settings as evidence.  Every piece of evidence needs analysis.  Analysis is showing why the evidence supports your theory.
My group and I (Alyssa, John, Vanessa and Lilybeth) are making a collage about The Butterfly.  Our theory is “If bad things are happening, stay strong because good things will come out of it.” We talked about how Sevrine stayed strong and her problem walked away. We did these collages because the teachers wanted us to get into the characters’ shoes.

Scholastic Book Clubs

The first book order flyer will go home with students tomorrow, and we highly encourage parents to order books for their children to help keep them excited about reading.  We take all forms of payment, but we definitely prefer you order using the Scholastic website.  The reason why is that with each parent order online, our class receives a free book.

Here is the link:
https://orders.scholastic.com/GTJ8R

You will be asked to add your child, and register a username and password (write this down - you'll need it when you order each time thereafter).  Then you can use a credit or debit card to order books.

You can also reach the website by typing in scholastic.com/readingclub and typing in the code GTJ8R

The first book order is due on Friday, October 4th.

Curriculum Morning

The fifth grade teachers will be discussing the 2013-2014 ELA, Math and Social Studies curricula with parents and families next Thursday, October 3rd, at 8:00 a.m., location to be determined.  Please mark your calendars.  If you cannot make the meeting, a handout will be sent home with your child that outlines our year.
