Our Author Visit with Lisa Graff

Lisa Graff, author of The Thing About Georgie, came to 5-305 and 5-307 today to discuss her books, her life and her writing. The students created similes, and some students were even given Georgie magnets as a prize. Lisa autographed postcards for everyone. Thanks to Lisa, and for the parents who organized her visit. Wednesday, June 10th: 5th Grade Luncheon at Bay Ridge Manor (11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.)

Wednesday, June 24th at 9:30 a.m.: Graduation at P.S. 295/New Voices Auditorium.

Photos that need to be scanned should be given to Emma Meyerson in Class 5-305 as soon as possible. Please be sure to put your name on the back of any photo you turn in so that it can be turned in to you.

Brooklyn Museum Photos

Parent Teacher Conferences

Next Thursday, March 19th, will be Parent Teacher Conferences. The afternoon session runs from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. and the evening session from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. Notices about appointments went home at the beginning of the week, and not all have been returned. Please let us know if you need a form so we can set up a time for your family.

Book Fair!

Next week, our school will be hosting its bi-annual Book Fair in the MMR. Books of all genres and for all ages will be available, with most priced between $2 and $20. Classes will be visiting Tuesday - Thursday to purchase books, and the book fair will also be during Parent-Teacher conferences.

TIME For Kids has an assignment for YOU. We've told you about global warming, endangered animals, hybrid cars, and green schools. Now we want YOU to show us What does Earth Day mean to you?

Rainey Lynch Last year's winner Rainey Lynch, 11, of Dallas, Texas, found these three green anoles in her backyard. Her photo is titled "Looking out for each other."

If you are a photographer, and you care about the environment, we invite you to submit your original photograph for the TIME For Kids Earth Day Photo Contest. The grand prize winner will receive a digital camera and publication of his or her winning photo in the April 17, 2009 Earth Day issue of TIME For Kids.

Snow Day/ Math Test Update!

We know you've all been on the edge of your seats, wondering "How will this snow day affect the state math test?" Here is your answer: the tests will be postponed one day, so part one will be this Wednesday, March 4th, and part two will be Thursday, March 5th.

It's Math Test Time!

This Tuesday, March 3rd, and Wednesday, March 5th, students will be taking the 5th grade New York State Mathematics exams. Please make sure to play outside after school, get lots of rest, and eat a healthy breakfast to prepare. Make sure to get to school on time, too!

Join Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment during Mid-Winter Break

If your children are interested in the environment or sustainability—the Center the Urban Environment has a great new program for urban explorers called CUE Labs. The program is designed to help fill a critical niche in the academic year—the holiday break. With one soon approaching, CUE is launching the program this February (2/16 – 2/20) and plans to continue it in the spring and summer recess as well.

“People are always looking for an exciting way to spend their school vacation,” said Doug Pereira, Director of Education and Community Initiatives at the Center and organizer of the program, “and CUE Labs offers kids the opportunity to learn amazing things about their urban environment through exploration, field-trips, hands-on activities and science experiments.” CUE Labs scientists will enjoy educational games, arts activities and model building in programs like City Critters where children from 5-7 explore the lives of worms and pill bugs and Eco-Defenders, where older kids investigate human impact on the environment and consider issues of reuse and conservation in relation to their community.

February Break Offerings:

City Critters

Students explore their often unseen neighbors in New York City by meeting live soil creatures including worms, pillbugs and snails. Using inquiry based science methods and tools, children have the opportunity to conduct experiments while learning about local ecology. Art projects, puppets, and games diversify this dynamic science experience.

Ages 5-7; February 16 – February 20, 9:00 am- 12:00 pm

Eco-Defenders

Through, plant, soil, water, and healthy food explorations students are introduced to healthy food and the value of recycling and sustainability. Students investigate human impact on the environment and consider issues of reuse and conservation in relation to their habits and community. Activities include hands on science experiments, interactive games, guest speakers, healthy snack making, and more!

Ages 8-10; February 16 – February 20, 9:00 am- 12:00 pm

Ages 11-13; February 16 – February 20, 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm

The Transition to Middle School

The NYC Dept. of Education is hosting a Brooklyn-wide meeting on assisting your child during the transition from Elementary to Middle School. Ice Skating

Ice Skating was cancelled today due to the rain. It has been postponed to Tuesday, February 3rd. We will be leaving right after the 1st period at 9:25 for the Ice Skating Rink.
