We piloted a new citywide Civics program this month. We learned about what it means to be American, thought critically about symbolism in the Great Seal and the Statue of Liberty, discussed the First Amendment, and developed a school budget using tax dollars. Fifth graders worked on stations related to the Cherokee and the Trail of Tears, as well as the connection of buffalo to Native Americans during the 1800s. Students analyzed quotes, speeches, diagrams, maps, paintings and photographs to develop a deeper understanding of these time periods.
